And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, "They have no wine." Jesus saith unto her, "Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come." His mother saith unto the servants, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it." And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, "Fill the waterpots with water." And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, "Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast." And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, "Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now" (John 2:1-10, KJV).
I was reading these verses this week, and something about what the host said to the groom caught my attention: he said the wine that Jesus made was the good stuff. Not only was it good, but the implication was that it was better than any of the other wine that was served at that feast! And rightly so, for it was made by the same Hand that fashioned the grapes from which wine is traditionally derived.
If Jesus was so good at making wine, I wonder how His fish and bread tasted to the 5000, the 4000, and finally, the disciples, on the Tiberian shore. Man, that fish must have been Heavenly! He'd put Red Lobster (not to even mention Long John Silver's) out of business!
But that's beside the point. What I see in the miracle at Cana is the subtle reminder that anything God does is better than the best that we can do on our own.
But there's more....
Back to the wine again....
At the Last Supper, Jesus told His disciples, "But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom" (Matt. 26:29). And He was true to His word. The various crucifixion accounts tell us that He refused any wine, when it was offered Him. Why? Because He wasn't thirsty? Because it was gross? Maybe. But I think it was to make a point: there's something far better waiting for us in God's Kingdom, something worth holding out for.
Perhaps this is why this world's pleasures never satisfy. Perhaps this is why alcohol, in particular, is so dangerous. Perhaps it is meant to remind us of what happened that day, in Galilee; that it is but a shadow of what awaits us in that Fair City. If there happens to be wine up there, I have a hunch it will not result in drunkenness or hangovers.
I won't look down upon you for responsibly enjoying an occasional drink, but as for me, I will refrain, until my first toast with Jesus.

Greg,
There is something else interesting. Jesus turned the water to wine. If the wine had run out it would have been an embarrassment to the groom and his family. jesus not only saved them embarrassment, he boosted them in the eyes of the governor of the feast and the guests, who weren't aware of the miracle. For it was the common practice to serve some good wine first, until drink had slackened the senses, then serve the cheap stuff. This was the reverse.
Why should we ever be embarrassed in sharing our trust in Jesus? When we do, we are offering the Good Stuff, better than anything they have ever had. And Our lord would never embarrass us.

"there's something far better waiting for us in God's Kingdom, something worth holding out for."
Nicely put, Greg. The Kingdom will one day be consummated when our Lord returns, but let's not forget that the Kingdom is present even now in the Church (for we are the "dwelling of God in the Spirit).
So while I agree with you that the "wine" will be much better in the consummation (and assuredly worth the wait), I'll happily share a beer with my Lord now in the Spirit as I sit on my deck and gaze upon the wondrous works of His hands in creation! :-)
Nice post.

Greg, thanks much for comments.
I am presently busy with both my blogs and watching Jeff's.
God bless.:)
Larry, yeah, I kind of glossed over the miracle itself, but that's only because it was so obvious. :) And you're right: we need to be proud of the truth of Jesus Christ and the Gospel.
GGM, it's interesting that a couple nights ago, my son asked me about God's Kingdom. I think the Bible actually refers to three entities: (1) the Kingdom that is within us and that all the saved currently belong to, (2) the 1000-year earthly Kingdom that many believe will be established on earth, and (3) the Kingdom established in Heaven. But you already knew that. :)
Jesus didn't sound too happy with his mother for getting him in that predicament. I'm surprised you didn't point out that this is a perfect example of a woman causing trouble. Do you ever feel like saying, "Woman, what have I to do with thee?" ;-)
Or maybe this is a proud mother who is anxious to show off her son's talents to the world? Hey, I'm just seeing it from a wife/mother's viewpoint (one who likes to make plans for her hubby and is very proud of her son). :-)
Whoa, Hon! Looks like you had a little trouble sleeping again. :(
Yeah, I really like Jesus calling his mother "woman". But I don't think it was as disrespectful then, as it is now.
You have an interesting take on what her motives might have been. ;)
There are really several things I could have talked about, regarding this account, but I just stuck with the one angle.
Hello Greg,
This reminded me of a dream i had which i am still trying to grasp it's full meaning.
I was setting at a table with a group of people. A woman went and got a bottle of wine and poured everyone some. I am not a drinker i truly hate the taste of alcohol but i took a sip and to my surprise it tasted very good i was thrilled and i just couldn't believe how good it tasted. As i was making remark with great joy about how surprised i was that it tasted so good, a man appeared to the left of me kinda in the shadows and stole the drink and quickly drank it down for himself. I was very upset at him, because he stole this from me and i was enjoying it. I then asked one of the people to pass me the bottle of wine so that i could pour me some more since mine was stolen (which they all had seen). Every one of them looked at me as if i should be ashamed of myself for even asking for more. They told me that i was being selfish and that what was left should be shared with everyone else but that i couldn't have anymore and for me to even ask was so cruel and selfish, even tho they knew mine got stolen they told me i wasn't worthy of having anymore but everyone else was. I was pretty ticked to say the least and then all of a sudden the bottle of wine appeared directly in front of me and i took it and poured me some and drank it down and i even made sure to leave some in the bottle i didn't even take it all. Then preceded to get up from the table telling them to never invite me to anymore of their little get togethers because i would refuse to come. And that no one deserved to be treated the way they treated me. I then went into another room which as i was looking around was filthy and i wanted to change my clothes (this part is odd) so when i finally found some of my other clothes i changed and left that place.
Any thoughts.. i truly believe its a dream from God. And i think i might have a slight understanding of it, but i was kinda curious to see if anyone would be able to confirm what I am already thinking :)
I hope you don't mind me commenting and asking this but i felt it would be alright and you wouldn't mind. Maybe you and your wife are meant to help me out here.. Maybe??
Hi Greg,
I can't elaborate much more than what GGM and Lary have said.
Good use of humor. How's that?
Great post and thoughts.
